Shane Grammer’s partnership with Sacramento’s street art and city beautification juggernaut Wide Open Walls continues in March of 2023. Grammer was once again tasked with submitting a concept to paint a contemporary urban mural for a local elementary school, this time specifically for John Cabrillo Elementary School. The subject of the mural is none other than the iconic historic figure, Frederick Douglas. Shane had been wanting an opportunity to depict Douglas, who, after his escape from slavery in Maryland, was a proactive abolitionist, writer, orator, statesman, and social reformer in the late 1800s. Wide Open Walls loved the concept, and Shane got to work executing the project. Shane appreciated that the teachers from the school took a special opportunity to bring their classes out to see the artist’s progress as he was working, and have an impromptu question and answer session with him. Among the questions he was asked, Shane’s favorites included, “How did you get into street art?”, “How did you learn to paint so good with a spray can?”, and, “How old were you when you became a celebrity?” Shane also engaged in dialogue with the teachers, and together they explained to the students who Frederick Douglas was, and why he was such an important historical figure. Shane was honored to have his eldest daughter, Ellie participate with him on the project. She helped record B roll footage for his various social media outlets, and helped lay down the base colors for the mural. The four-hundred square foot mural is a vibrant, contemporary urban depiction of Douglas that feels almost electric, jumping the icon from the late 1800s into the 21st century.
