About this mural:

This mural, located in Columbia, South Carolina, celebrates the city’s history, resilience, and cultural identity. Inspired by archival materials, I incorporated key elements such as a 1900s map of downtown Columbia, a train conductor representing the city’s industrial legacy, and a portrait of Laura Spong, honoring her contributions to the arts and her role in inspiring future generations. The creative process was grounded in research and community engagement, ensuring the design reflected Columbia’s rich past while embracing the vibrant present of the Vista, a hub of art and culture in the city. Every detail was carefully designed to tell a story of perseverance, growth, and collaboration that defines this community. The mural was commissioned by a client whose vision and passion inspired the final design, and her response that the piece “exceeded all expectations” is a testament to the collaboration and care involved in its creation. For me, this project represents the power of public art to honor shared histories, foster connection, and inspire growth. It serves as a visual landmark that invites viewers to reflect on Columbia’s past, engage with its present, and envision a bright future for the community.
