About this mural:
With Iowa City’s history as a cultural center of literature and incubator of notable authors, I wanted to create a design that would illustrate the power that literature and storytelling has to bring people together. This is why I chose scenes that evoke the thousands-of-years-old tradition of telling stories around the campfire and other ways these stories now manifest as in poetry, books, song lyrics, and love letters. I chose to portray the scenes in the style of a woodcut, a medium that has also been used for conveying information, stories, and cartoons for thousands of years.
