About this mural:
2017 8’x 40’ Aerosol, Spray Paint on Corrugated Metal Uppercut Boxing Gym, Minneapolis, Minnesota This mural is a collage of traditional graffiti motifs. I painted this mural in the courtyard – outdoor exercise area, of Uppercut Boxing gym. They wanted background art that speaks to the aesthetics of toughness, mysterious urban/street decor, color, energy, and artwork that may visually enhance the workouts of their athletes.

Minneapolis-based artist, Peyton Scott Russell, was first introduced to graffiti art in 1984 through the film, Style Wars. Peyton has a B.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and for over three decades has been a professional artist and arts instructor, facilitating numerous community mural projects and arts education programs. Through his current arts program, SPRAYFINGER®, Peyton manifests his mission to increase awareness of graffiti as a teachable art form by working with schools, teachers, and artists on curriculum design, outlines, and lesson plans to deepen the understanding of a long-misunderstood art form.
