About this mural:

A mural commissioned by Mitsuru Sushi and Grill, a small business on busy First Street in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles. Due to major downtown protests in June, many neighborhood businesses boarded up their windows and some wanted to beautify their storefronts. I proposed a mural consisting of portraits of first-generation Japanese immigrants, which was modified through discussions to large portraits of the business-owner’s sisters and father. The street-facing mural was meant to clearly foreground Asian American immigrants in a neighborhood founded by immigrants. I received ample positive feedback from passersby while in the process of painting, especially from local Japanese American residents. It is rare for Asian Americans to see our faces and stories reflected in public art. Though this temporary mural is now gone, it was the only business that kept its plywood boards up long past what was needed, demonstrating that my work can contribute dynamism and vitality to a commercial environment.
