About this mural:

Our intention was to design a mural that would further energize a section of Old Street, infusing it with an enchantingly tropical vibe. As an homage to the owners of the wall, Prima Elements Holistic Wellness Center, the underlying concept of the design is the elements: earth, air, fire, water, and spirit. To denote these, natural subjects from disparate tropical regions were incorporated into the piece. The most prominent component of the design, the tiger, conveys power and strength and is symbolic of fire. Water is depicted as the bright blue-green form that flows across the wall, a symbol of fluidity and change. Toucans are considered spiritual messengers in the forests they call home and as such, represent travel, insight, and the element of air. As tokens of earth, the banana leaves and pineapples bring prosperity and abundance. Finally, moths are considered by many cultures to be associated with the soul and thus serve as an emblem of spirit.

Thyla Arden and Ayda Rose are long time friends and collaborators, having worked together on multiple public art projects, exhibitions and experimental pieces in North Carolina, Wisconsin and Washington. A Y D A R O S E North Carolina based muralist, Ayda Rose, has been honing her skills in both digital and traditional mediums for the past several years. Originally an illustrator, Ayda blended her digital design skills with her love of painting, bringing a unique graphic style to her large scale paintings and murals. Her process incorporates digital experimentation with dynamic compositions and the design of vibrant color palettes. Her artwork often features elements of nature, modern and ancient culture, and symbolism with an aesthetic influenced by traditional Japanese art, tattoos, street art and graphic design. The last 2 years have seen tremendous growth in Ayda’s practice as she has completed many public art projects individually, and with her long time art collaborator, Thyla Arden, across the US. T H Y L A A R D E N Thyla Arden is a traveling muralist, designer and artist living and working across the USA. As a native South African her colorful murals and artworks pay homage to her homeland and traveling experiences worldwide. Her art always strives to infuse bold, vibrant colors and patterns together with traditional African, Asian, and Mediterranean stylistic elements to explore heritage, ethnicity and the environment. She studied and completed a bachelor of Journalism at Rhodes university in South Africa, specializing in photography. Throughout her academic and working career she always kept up with her personal love of painting and creating and upon moving to the USA in 2018 began her professional trajectory in art and muraling. “As a visual artist across multiple fields it has always been my objective to tell the story whether it be mine or the community I work within.” She has since completed numerous artworks, commissions, art fairs and murals across the USA. Most recently in 2021 she showcased her artwork at the prestigious Chicago Art fair. In addition to her own individual work she has professionally collaborated with art partner Ayda Rose on multiple art projects including commissions, art shows and murals.
