Bio
Nico Cathcart is a painter and muralist hailing from Toronto, Ontario, and is currently living in Richmond, Virginia. She strives to discuss social justice issues, intersectional feminism and climate change in her inclusive, highly-colorful realistic works which often include local flora and fauna. Nico’s work is process and research driven, often including community members as both subjects, and as participants in creating her large scale work. As a differently-abled person, in the process of going deaf, Nico often uses birds in her work to open a dialog about her hearing loss. Nico’s work has been shown at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture, and the Hermitage Museum in Norfolk, as well as galleries across the US and Canada. In 2020, Nico was honored as an Agent of Change for her use of activism in her art by the Virginia Museum of History and Culture, and was the recipient of the 1708 Gallery Space grant. She also was invited to do a TED Talk about the responsibility of public art, and her disability in 2018. In 2021 Nico's work will be featured in Beijing, China, as well as multiple festivals across the US.
