________________________________________
The Artist in Residence is a volunteer position at Joshua Tree National Park. The goal of the volunteer position is to translate the meanings and significance of Joshua Tree National Park into various artistic expression within their chosen art medium in order to build stewardship among the visiting public and share the park’s resources with audiences in their own communities.
_________________________
Most of the Artist’s time will be self-directed project time. The Artist is expected to pursue the personal goals and projects as outlined in his/her proposal. This time will be spent in
Joshua Tree National Park, learning about the park and using that knowledge and experience to create or be inspired to create art.
___________________________
Artists in Residence are housed at Black Rock in the northwest corner of the park. This area has a ranger station, a campground and access to many beautiful trails. Sitting at the base of the San Bernardino mountain range, its higher altitude makes this area one of the best for Joshua Trees and somewhat cooler than other parts of the park. Although conditions at this location are often relatively temperate, artists should be prepared for more extreme conditions during the course of their stay, including high winds, low relative humidity and temperatures that can range from 100 degrees Fahrenheit during the day to as low as 30 degrees at night.
Artists sleep in the studio space in the Black Rock Campground, which is furnished with a twin bed and bureau. The studio has a drafting table, several folding tables, and ample natural light. Public toilets are adjacent to the studio space. Shared kitchen, laundry, and bathing facilities are a short walk or drive from the studio at the Interagency Fire Center. The distance between the sleeping space and the kitchen and bathing facility is less than half a mile. The town of Yucca Valley is about a 10 minute drive away and has a variety of shopping and dining as well as medical facilities.
Only one occupant is allowed at any time in AiR housing. Park policy prohibits bringing pets.
Though housing is provided, artists are responsible for their own expenses such as meals, transportation, personal art supplies, etc. _______________
This is an unpaid opportunity, even though the project budget says $1

APPLY HERE: https://mypagosa.org/2025-call-for-artists -- The Town of Pagosa Springs, in partnership with the Pagosa Springs Arts Council, is issuing a Request for Proposal (RFP) inviting artists to create a new public mural as part of the Town’s Public Arts Plan (mypagosa.org/pagosa-public-arts-program). The mural will be featured on the Geothermal Building, a prominent location along the main thoroughfare that offers high visibility to both locals and visitors. Positioned near a popular riverwalk, the artwork will provide an engaging visual experience for pedestrians while enhancing the area’s cultural and aesthetic vibrancy.
Pagosa Springs, derived from the Ute word “Pah-gosa,” meaning “healing water” or “boiling water,” is a small mountain town rich in history and natural beauty. Known for its geothermal hot springs, Pagosa is a sacred area for the Ute and Navajo peoples. Today, the town is celebrated for its outdoor recreation, cultural vibrancy, and connection to geothermal energy, which heats local businesses and homes while supporting the popular soaking pools at the Springs Resort and Spa. Pagosa Springs has a unique relationship with geothermal energy and its uses. From heating downtown businesses to the popular hot springs aquifer which feeds hot mineral soaking pools along the San Juan River to the nearby Geothermal Greenhouse Partnership growing domes that use geothermal heat to provide year-round vegetables as well as education of this renewable energy resource unique to Pagosa, the artwork on this building should reflect some or all aspects of these elements and embody the community’s heritage, offering a lasting piece that resonates with residents and visitors alike.
The 2025 public art selection will focus on creating a cohesive mural for the geothermal building, covering all or part of its exterior. The amount allotted to this project is anticipated to be $15,000 in the Town’s Fiscal Year 2025 Budget. The projected amount is subject to the availability of an annual appropriation by the Town. *Review to Site for updated plans already taking place with the building. The mural will ideally be completed by 12/31/25, but completion may be extended to 6/30/26, depending on the proposal.
