APP LINK -- https://lagi2025fiji.org/ -- Coastal island communities are especially vulnerable to climate change. Stronger cyclones, rising sea levels, warming waters, biodiversity loss, prolonged droughts, and major flood events threaten their existence.
Marou Village in the Yasawa archipelago of Fiji is one such community.
The residents of Marou Village and LAGI have partnered to co-create a unique design competition. Together we invite you to design a work of art in the landscape that will supply clean and reliable electricity and drinking water to the coastal village’s 67 households, support tourism, and help to build a sustainable future for generations to come.
Can demonstrating sustainable and resilient energy and water systems with Marou Village help establish a precedent for other communities to follow? Two winning teams will each be provided with
$100,000 USD to advance their design proposal and build a functioning prototype of their idea in Fiji.
Dozens of submissions will be included in a full-color hardbound book with wide distribution and exhibited throughout Fiji.

Cameroon, often referred to as Africa in miniature, boasts a rich natural beauty that remains largely unexplored by many, particularly children from disadvantaged urban backgrounds. While basic environmental education is part of the school curriculum, it is limited and lacks practical, hands-on experiences that allow children to connect with nature. Many urban children, especially those from low-income families, have never encountered a forest or seen wildlife, as their families cannot afford trips to zoos or gardens.
The ongoing Anglophone crisis in the southwest region of Cameroon has further exacerbated this disconnect. Fear and anxiety about the forests and wildlife have emerged, as many believe separatist fighters hide in these areas. This has fostered a mindset of suspicion towards nature, causing children who once enjoyed visiting their villages during holidays to remain in urban areas, further distancing themselves from the environment. As a result, interest in environmental conservation and stewardship has diminished.
To address these challenges, we aim to combine environmental education, field experiences, indigenous knowledge, and vibrant murals on school campuses to inspire environmental consciousness and promote stewardship among students.
Our goal is to empower 1,000 children across ten primary schools in the southwest region, targeting 100 students per school aged 6-15 years. We will begin by educating them about environmental conservation, endangered species, and dispelling the myth that armed individuals inhabit the forests. Following this, we will organize a field trip to the Limbe Botanical Gardens and Zoo, where students will engage directly with nature and learn about endangered species.
During the excursion, each group of students will be accompanied by a knowledgeable field guide and a local indigenous person. The field guide will offer insights into the species they observe, while the indigenous person will share cultural stories and discuss potential conservation efforts that the students can participate in as young environmental stewards.
Students will be provided with drawing materials to illustrate the species they see during the trip and will later refine their drawings in class. They will then present their work, with awards given to the top five presentations.
To ensure that this experience leaves a lasting impression, we will create two striking murals on large walls at each school. These murals will serve as a reminder of their journey and raise awareness among future students about the importance of environmental conservation and stewardship.
